Misc notes in Diary

Butter fat for 1924 900 Ibs  sold 375.00 used butter 67.00

By heck!  I'm ready for a full days work.

Down on the farm, bout half past four, I slip in my pants and sneak out the door,
Out to the yard I run like the dickins, to milk ten cows and feed the chickens,
Clean out the barn, curry Nance and Jigs,Separate the cream, and slop all the pigs,
Work two hours then eat like a turk, and by heck I'm ready for a full days work,
Then I grease the wagon and put on the rack, Throw a jug of water in an old grain sack.
Hitch up the horses hustle down the lane, must get the hay for it looks like rain,
Look over yonder sure as I am born Cattles on the rampage and cows in the corn,
Start across the medder run a mile or two, Heaving like I'm windbroke, get wet clean thru,
Get back to the horses, then for recompense, Nance got straddle the barbed wire fence,
Joints all aching and muscles in a jerk, I'm fit as a fiddle for a full days work
Work all summer tell winter is nigh,Then figure up the books and heave a big sigh
Worked all year, didn't make a thing, got less cash now than I di last spring
Now some people say that there ain't no hell But they never farmed, so they can't tell
When spring rolls around I'll take another chance while the fringe grows longer on my old pants
Give my spenders a hitch, my belt another jerk and by heck, I'm ready for a full days work.

This poem is most likely from a fellow named Harrison Flash

This is an obit I found because I was curious what would cause their deaths in the same week.
Truman Sartain Came with his parents Peter & Anna Warner Sartain to Osage as a child in the early 1880's.
-------------------------

Husband and Wife die within Week
Death of Mrs. Truman Sartain on Monday followed by that of Husband Early this morning

Not many years has the Enterprise been called upon to record the death in one issue of the paper the completion of two lives within the same home., they being the head of the family, but such is the duty of us this week. Since the last issue of the paper both Mr. and Mrs. Truman Sartain, of Osage Township, have passed from the things of this life each being the victim of disease that has lingered with them for a long time.
Mrs. Sartain was the first to be taken, death coming on Monday, the 13th and the funeral being held on Wednesday from the Baptist church, of which she was a member for many years past. Rev. H. W. Mitchell preached the sermon. The cause of her death was cancer.
This morning early death came relieve Truman W. Sartain of his suffering. For many weeks he had been confined to his home, at times in a serious condition and death brought relief from a situation for which the skill of physicians was unable to cope. The funeral of Truman Sartain will be held on Sunday from the Baptist church at 2:30. Rev. H. W. Mitchell preaching the sermon.
Etta M. Meinke was born in the southern part of this state and she became a resident of this locality about forty years ago. In 1887 Truman and Miss Etta M. Meinke were married at Osage, since which they have made their home in this vicinity. To them two children were born, Leon and Harold, both of whom live here, the former being on R.F.D. No. 2 out of Park Rapids and the latter being in charge of the farm home. For many years the deceased was a member of the Baptist church of Park Rapids, and interested in the church of Park Rapids and active in church work. Besides the two children there is left to mourn her loss, three sisters, Mrs. F. P. Tooley, Mrs. George Plummer of Park Rapids and Mrs. Perkinson of Sauk Center, also three brothers, William, Charles and John Meinke.

Truman W. Sartain came to Hubbard county in 1880 and was a resident of this locality during the intervening 45 years. He was born in Winona county, coming here when a young man, and having an active part in the experiences which fell to the lot of those who opened the way for a better community and modern conveniences. The Sartain home was known for its open hospitality and good will and in his death there is removed from the community one of the pioneers who contributed much toward the development and prosperity of the community Besides the two sons who are left there are two brothers, A. E. Sartain of Osage and Andrew Sartain of Montana.
