Lawrence Wilson died on September 6 1938.

He was a son of Amelia, who was one of Xaver Aleck’s daughters and sister to Martha Jane Aleck Henderson.  So Lawrence would have been Martha Janes Nephew.. so the Wilsons are cousins!   The Wilsons especially Esta and Ruth appeared in Tracie’s diary entries, they were good friends.   The Wilsons also came to Park Rapids in 1914.

Creszentia Aleck 1892

I have scanned everything in the Purple Book that Tracie Stuve Henderson used like a scrapbook.  I will present them all according to the year they happened.

A thin paper was folded in fourths.

1892 November 20 Creszentia Aleck

Xaver Alecks  youngest sister Creszentia  was born  September 16, 1831  and died November 20, 1892 in Rigel, Baden Germany.  She was a nun.  She left Xaver Aleck a sum of 800 marks.  She  left the bulk of her estate for the establishment of a home for poor children.

This paper is a translation of her will.

1903 Xaver and Christiane Aleck

June 28, 1903 at 9 a.m. Xaver Aleck died.  He was 75 years old.

His obituary reads:
Xaver Aleck, the son of Lorenz and Agatha Aleck was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany on March 13, 1828.

He migrated to America in 1852 settling for a time in Philadelphia.  He came to Iowa in 1856 and served a home in Harrison County.  After a sojourn of two years he returned to Philadelphia and worked in his trade of tailoring.  In 1860 he entered upon his lifework occupation of farming in Harrison County.  He continued for 40 years to cultivate his farm and then removed to Logan, Iowa where he has since resided.

He died at 9 a. m. on June 28, 1903.  He was married to Christiane Geiger in Philadelphia on February 18, 1860.  To them were born twelve children.

He called no man “Master” and assumed no obligation he could not conscientiously fulfill.  He would not countenance double dealing or subterfuge, nor lend his influence for mercenary gain.  He united himself the best elements of the land of his birth and the land of his adoption.  He was successful in acquiring a competence.  In attaining his ideal of manhood and in all things he did well that which he was called upon to do.  His name shall be honored, his memory cherished, and his influence unimpaired.

His life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world. “THIS WAS A MAN!”

He is buried in the cemetery in Logan Iowa.
Xaver Aleck Funeral Card from 1903

After Xaver’s death Christiane just fell apart—she just couldn’t cope by herself.  Xaver had always told her what to do.  She was taken to St. Bernard’s Hospital in Council Bluffs where she died 3 December 1903.

The epitath on Xaver’s tombstone reads:
“Man is an atom—it lives and dies but the life principal is eternal.”
