In 1855 he headed west..the lure of land with good soil. He headed to Chicago by train, he worked there three weeks and then headed for St Paul Minnesota..but it was spring (April) and lakes were still frozen..he thought Minnesota was too cold a country to live in. He went by boat to St. Louis, from there he went to Weston, Iowa and then to Council Bluffs Iowa arriving in July. He and five others started with an ox team into Nebraska. They returned after repairing a linch pin ( No wood could be found in Nebraska) and they forgot their axel grease. They returned to Council Bluffs where he worked in a brick yard. In 1855-56 he worked as a cook for a gang of men who were erecting a sawmill.
The next spring a young Senator, Senator Logan asked him to make his wedding clothes. He went home with the Senator to Harrison County Iowa. He made a land claim in Cass Township in Harrison County on the Pigeon Creek. He build a “house” and cleared land.
